What’s the operating temp on a Cummins ISL?
Cummins says that 212 is ok operating temp for the ISL engine. What you are probably seeing is the fan controller switching to max speed, which cools the radiator quickly. Guys, thanks for your help.
How big is the side radiator on a 400 ISL?
Our 400 ISL runs between 173 and 183 except on the hottest days and steepest long grades. I’ve never seen it above 200 either on the analog or digital gauge. We have the side radiator which I measure to be about 1100 square inches. Our charge air cooler and transmission cooler are all nested.

What causes side radiator on Cummins 400 to overheat?
Some of these are LOW-HIGH and some are variable. Check with Freightliner for the “default to ON/HIGH” position for the side radiator fan (normally unplug wire from thermosensor). If no overheating, suspect thermosensor. Another possible cause could be an inaccurate gauge.
